Varsity Lakes woman still loves a party at 101

Bolton Clarke The Terraces, Varsity Lakes resident Mona has celebrated her 101^st birthday bigger and better than her last.

Despite living what the she considers an ‘ordinary life’, the great great grandmother is still the life of the party.

Born in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Mona moved to Melbourne in her younger years, eventually starting her career during WWII and raising her family there.

“When I left school, I went to work for Ansett Airways during the war and I quite enjoyed it,” Mona said.

“They wanted more people to work for them, so I decided to give it a go and there were seven of us girls that worked together.

“We were building the wings of the planes and I remember they told us to drink more milk to be stronger.

“All of us would go ice skating once a week and the girls taught me to skate – I just loved it!”

While working at Ansett in her early 20s, Mona met Frank, who would become her husband.

The pair had four children and now Mona keeps busy as a grandmother to 14, great grandmother to 26 and a great great grandmother of five with her hands full keeping track of everyone!  

“I lived with my daughter until I was 98 when I moved into The Terraces and even now I don’t feel really old,” she said.

“I think I just lived a normal life and I still like a wine with my dinner each night!”
