Legends connect – aged care residents visit ex-racehorses
Living legends from Bolton Clarke’s Charlesbrook aged care home have been horsing around with legends of the racetrack during their annual visit to Living Legends.
The animal therapy sessions give residents the opportunity to connect with ex-racehorses and learn about their new lives beyond the racing industry.
Having grown up around horses, Charlesbrook resident Patricia says interacting with the animals and enjoying the outdoors make it a favourite day out.
“My grandfather always had horses when I was growing up and they are beautiful creatures,” she said.
“I’m glad to see the horses at Living Legends enjoying a slower pace in retirement and being cared for by the lovely staff.
Patricia spent time with ex-racehorse Fawkner who won over $3million and 11 races in his career.
“This is my second time to the farm and I really like seeing Fawkner – he’s grey like me!”
Charlesbrook Lifestyle Services Coordinator Annette says the visits have become a much-anticipated annual fixture on the calendar.
“This is our third time out to Living Legends and it’s always a wonderful day getting up close and personal with the horses,” she said.
“Residents get the opportunity to pat and feed these beautiful animals and learn about their history from a tour guide who explains where they are originally from, the races they have won and how much money they earned over their career.
“It always puts a smile on people’s faces and it’s so special to be able to feel, touch and talk to these incredible creatures.”
