Furry friend brings sparkle to day at Cazna Gardens

A local support dog is bringing joy and a little sparkle to residents at the Bolton Clarke Cazna Gardens residential aged care community.

Sparkles has been a part of residents’ lives for six years now and her visits are something everyone looks forward to.

Owner and Physiotherapy Assistant, Molly, says Sparkles encourages residents to get out and about within the community.

“I work with residents to get their mobility back and sometimes we find it hard to get them motivated as they think they are too old or there is no point in regaining their strength,” she says.

“We use Sparkles as a goal for them because they want to see her and it’s a good way to get them out of their room when they aren’t looking forward to their exercises or walks.

“We do find that Sparkles helps with the residents’ moods, especially those who might be dealing with depression or anxiety.”

Molly, who has been part of the Cazna Gardens team for 10 years, first introduced Sparkles to residents on weekends when she was out walking. 

“She now comes in with me to work every day, from 8am to 4pm. She will take the time to go say hello to each and every resident and comes with me for my morning check ins,” she says.

For resident Raymond, Sparkles comes along for his regular exercises and walks while he reminisces in the days of having his own pets.

“When I do my exercises, Sparkles will lay down in my room or will come out and check on us,” Raymond says.

“It’s great having her around and everyone loves her.”

Cazna Gardens Residential Manager Tristesse says Sparkles’ presences within the community is invaluable.

“People feel more energised, enthusiastic, and inspired after spending time with Sparkles and we have found that residents with dementia seem to be more settled around her,” she says.
