Chinese cultural celebrations bring in the New Year
Pemulwuy aged care residents welcomed the Year of the Dragon with a month of Chinese cultural celebrations during February.
Residents were visited by the Chinese Dancing Group from Rhodes Muti-cultural Society and enjoyed traditional Chinese dancing, music and tasted Chinese style green bean cake.
Other activities throughout the month included visits from the Chinese community and making traditional steam buns.
Lifestyle Services Coordinator Hong Su said the festivities were great fun for residents and team alike.
“It not only provided the residents with the sensory stimulation of taste, smell, vision and touch, but also some great opportunities for connection and cultural awareness,” she said.
“They really enjoyed making something different, and instead of simple ball shaped buns we made fish shapes with the dough. Residents made red mung bean filling and shaped them with spoons, forks and chop sticks.
“The best part was getting to share it after the cooking class was over!”
Residents are now looking forward to more cultural cooking classes over coming months.
