Banora Point veterans receive Quilts of Valour honour
In a moving ceremony eight Bolton Clarke Darlington residents were awarded a Quilt of Valour for their vast and varied military history.
Residents Bert Barker (WWII), Nona Barker (WWII), Brian Shoobert (Korean War), David Simpson (Indonesian Conflict), Keith Jacobs (Vietnam War), Wayne Huxley (Vietnam War), Michael Moran (Vietnam War), and Ray Dillon (Vietnam War) were recongised and respectfully presented their handmade quilt.
Michael Moran joined the army aged 20 and served for 22 years. He had two years of active service in the Vietnam War.
Herbert (Bert) Baker, now 102, is a very proud and rare foundation member of RAEME (Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers). Commissioned at age 20, Bert’s career spanned 38 years with the most notable time being his five years as Commanding Officer of the RAEME Training Centre at Bandiana.
His wife, Nona, will also receive a quilt. After joining the Army at 19, she was a Corporal in a single corps unit.
QOV Australia Inc. has presented quilts to Defence personnel and the immediate families of soldiers since the beginning of 2012. The quilts are hand made by quilters across Australia and are presented to the recipient with a covering letter and certificate.
