Badgingarra farmer gets his hands dirty in the kitchen

Badgingarra farmer Lloyd is no stranger to rolling up his sleeves and getting his hands dirty - but now he’s doing it not on the farm, but in the kitchen.

Lloyd has been receiving regular visits from Bolton Clarke’s Acacia Living Home and Community Care team ever since he broke his back in a farming accident four years ago.

“I am a person where my living has been made by my hands and I’ve been in the open air all my life,” Lloyd said.

“After the accident, I was in a brace that wrapped right around me for three months and was in hospital for my son’s wedding at the time.

“I was lucky it didn’t incapacitate me so I’m now walking and totally independent in one way but not in another.

Lloyd lives on the farm with his son and daughter-in-law and before his accident, was still actively involved in the physical work of farming sheep, cattle and grain. Now, his regular home care visits provide him with the support he needs to regain his independence with a focus on preparing easy, nutritious meals he can make himself.

“The team are absolute gems and help me with cooking and cleaning around the place. Having them come out has helped me a lot because I couldn’t even make my bed at one stage.”

“Kaz visits me regularly and helps me cook all sorts of things like shepherd’s pie and pizzas.

“I had never made a pizza before and don’t know if I’ll make it again but it was good to try making something new.”
